Company History
Colonial Veterinary Hospital opened in 1971 and was founded by Dr. George Ross. Dr. Ross was a surgery professor at Cornell University when he decided to open his own practice. At the time, the surgery specialty was in its infancy and Dr. Ross, a very well known surgery specialist, had no problem providing high quality general practice to the pets of Ithaca and surrounding communities. As time went on, more doctors joined the staff and Dr. Ross eventually focused almost exclusively on surgery while the other doctors took over the general practice. This is how we have come to have a very unique combination of general and specialty practice. In 1992 Dr. Ross's son, Dr. Tom Ross, who had also become board certified in surgery, rejoined the practice that he was a part of since he was a young boy. Since that time, many changes have occurred, all in the name of advancing the practice of veterinary medicine. Dr. Tom Ross took over the practice when Dr. George Ross retired with a goal of continuing his father's desire to offer the best veterinary care possible. In 2007 our hospital expanded hours and staff to provide veterinarian coverage from 8am-10pm seven days a week as well as 24 hour care for our patients via around the clock staffing with licensed veterinary technicians. In 2008 we completed construction of a brand new hospital. Since 2005 we have added specialties of radiology, oncology, and internal medicine as well as a doctor certified in veterinary acupuncture. We are large enough to offer a very exciting and challenging work environment yet small enough for a licensed veterinary technician to be able to use a large number of skills on a regular basis.
